Recorded Sound

Background

This subgroup is drafting a broad set of guidelines that pertain to the reformatting of historical sound recordings and exploring the issues associated with the receipt of born digital content. Since the field of audio preservation is relatively mature, this subgroup is able to draw on important work done by other recent projects, for example, the Engineers Roundtables sponsored by the National Recording Preservation Board, the guidelines from the International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives, the metadata standards being developed by the Audio Engineering Society, and the final report from the Sound Directions project carried out by Indiana and Harvard Universities. The subgroup is identifying preservation elements that are not addressed in those documents and plans to develop information or tools that will fill the gaps.
