The documents in this section have been drafted by the Still Image Working Group. The current (and future) documents listed here will range from guidelines recommending specific metrics to those describing more general processes or methodologies. The titles below are linked to a page containing additional information, with links to view or download the documents.
The following categories are used to describe the status of each document in the process: Draft for public comment (with a closing date), Draft under review (by Still Image Working Group), Approved (all changes have been made).
The Working Group is always interested in receiving additional comments and any document may be revised when warranted. Each of the document pages listed below includes a link to our comment form; please use the form to submit your suggestions to us.
GUIDELINES
- Technical Guidelines for Digitizing Cultural Heritage Materials
The aim of this document is to define approaches for creating digital surrogates for facilitating access and reproduction of cultural heritage materials.
- Digitization Activities - Project Planning - Approved
The aim of this document is to define activities relating to the digitization of original cultural materials, and to outline general steps for planning and management of this process.
- TIFF Image Metadata - Approved
The following guideline on TIFF Image Metadata submitted by the Still Image Working group represents a minimal set of recommended embedded metadata for historical and cultural heritage digital imaging.
- Digital Imaging Framework - Approved
This document is intended to serve as a coherent framework to describe and critically assess imaging performance and quality, and is based on existing international standards to the extent possible.
- Content Categories and Digitization Objectives
This presentation was drafted by the Categories and Objectives Sub-Group, based on clearly articulated objectives describing the expected uses of the digitized content.

- Gap Analysis
The Gap Analysis is intended as a living and evolving document to identify and prioritize those areas of digitization that fall within the scope of this Initiative, and that are: a) not currently defined within existing agency guidelines; or b) not adequately addressed by those guidelines.
